Cross Stitch Tips

Choosing your Project

If you are new to cross stitching, it is recommended that you start with a simple project and work your way to the more complicated ones. Simple projects usually do not require the use of 1/2" stitching, back stitching or 3/4" stitch. Choose one that just uses the traditional "X" on the whole project.

Working with Multiple Colors

Often times cross stitchers are intimidated by the number of colors used in a fine art painting project. This should not be the case. The more colors used on the project, usually the more faithful the outcome is to the original painting. DMC now has 454 solid embroidery thread. While most pattern color usage do not go over 100, you can imagine that a pattern would not look as good with only 30 colors rather than using 70 or even 90.

When working with projects that have large numbers of colors, try working on small areas at a time. For instance working on a 2" x 2" space and filling the area up before proceeding to the next will result in less mistakes than trying to conquer a large area all at once.

Don't Be in a Hurry

Cross stitch is project that takes time and a lot of patience. The more you try and hurry a project, the more chances of making mistakes. So take it slow and enjoy the whole project. Once you are done with your project you can look at it with a great sense of accomplishment! Imagine creating a master painting and you didn't even have to study art!
